Daddycatcher’s MUSICAL MONDAY: Brent Barrett and Michael Jeter in GRAND HOTEL

File this under: Musicals that Need a Broadway Revival!

This musical is based on a 1929 German novel by Vicki Baum, which in turn was adapted into the 1932 all-star MGM film, Grand Hotel.

The show focuses on events that take place over the course of a weekend in an elegant hotel in 1928 Berlin and the intersecting stories of various guests of the hotel.  It was directed and choreographed by the legendary Tommy Tune.  The musical is a reworking of a previous work entitled At the Grand, with music by Robert Wright and George Forrest and a book by Luther Davis.  Tune brought it Peter Stone to re-work the book and Maury Yeston (Nine) to compose additional songs while revising others.

Below is a clip from the 1990 Tony Awards.  The song performed is “We’ll Take a Glass Together.”  It features Brent Barrett as Baron Felix Von Gaigern (“a noble man and a thief”) and Michael Jeter as Otto Kringelein (“a bookkeeper looking for life”).  Jeter won the Tony Award for Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance.

And yes, that is Jane Krakowski at the beginning!
