The Normal Heart

Posted in NY Theatre on October 19, 2010 by Daddycatcher

Daddycatcher just arrived home after seeing a very emotionally satisfying staged reading of one of his favorite plays, The Normal Heart.  The semi-autobiographical play by Larry Kramer focuses on the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, the gay Jewish founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group.

The play first premiered in 1985 and starred Joel Grey, who replaced Brad Davis as Ned Weeks.  Davis fell sick, presumably from complications of AIDS (as mentioned y Mr. Grey this evening),and Grey took over the part several weeks into the run.  He directed this evenings benefit reading starring Broadway director Joe Mantello as Ned Weeks.  The cast also featured a Broadway all-star cast that included Glenn Close, Victor Garber, Patrick Wilson, Jack Macbrayer, Michael Cerveris, Michael Stuhlbarg, John Benjamin Hickey, and Jason Butler Harner.

It was truly a great and special evening on Broadway.
