Daddycatcher’s MUSICAL MONDAY: CHICAGO

April 1998 – Daddycatcher begged his parents to drive the 3 hours to Dallas so that he could see the first national tour of the Broadway revival Chicago.  It would go on to be Daddycatcher’s favorite musical for a short time…it is now #2 on Daddycatcher’s Top 10 Favorite Musicals of All Time.

The performance at the Music Hall of Fair Park was astounding.  The cast was led by Nancy Hess as Roxie, Stephanie Pope as Velma, and dreamy Brent Barrett as Billy Flynn.  As a Broadway novice at this time, Chicago was unlike anything he had ever seen.  Up to this point, Daddycatcher had only seen The Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, and Smokey Joe’s Cafe.

The Bob Fosse, John Kander and Fred Ebb musical was stark, dark, and electrifying.  It spoke to a sensibility of Daddycatcher’s that was just beginning to form.  Since then, Daddycatcher has seen the show about 15 times.

He was also lucky enough to go to the New York premiere of the film version at the Ziegfeld Theatre.  To this day, it is one of most memorable evening’s that Daddycatcher has ever had.
