Daddycatcher’s MUSICAL MONDAY: Brent Carver, Anthony Crivello, and Chita Rivera in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN

We are counting down Daddycatcher’s Top 10 Favorite Musicals of All-Time and at #4 is the dark and daring Kiss of the Spider Woman.  The musical is based on the novel of the same name written by Manuel Puig.  The score is by the great songwriting team John Kander & Fredd Ebb with book by Tony Award winner Terrence McNally.  The production was directed by Harold Prince.

Daddycatcher saw a very haunting production of Kiss of the Spider Woman at Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre in New Orleans during his high school senior trip in 2000.  The production was top-tier community theatre but was exhilarating.  The original trio of actors from the Broadway production – Chita Rivera, Brent Carver, and Anthony Crivello – each won a Tony Award for their portrayals of the Spider Woman, Aurora, and Valentin.

As a special bonus, Daddycatcher has included Vanessa Williams’ rendition of the title song.  Daddycatcher’s introduction to this musical was through the Williams cast recording (she replaced Rivera in the Broadway production) which also included Howard McGillin and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
