Daddycatcher’s MUSICAL MONDAY: 1970 Original Broadway Cast and Raul Esparza in COMPANY

We have reached the halfway point in Daddycatcher’s countdown of his Top 10 Favorite Musicals of All Time.  At number 5 is the Stephen Sondheim / George Furth 1970 musical, Company.

Company revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends.  The show was the first collaboration between Sondheim and director Harold Prince.

Daddycatcher purchased the 1995 revival cast recording when he was 17 and enjoyed the show.  But it wasn’t until he purchased the original cast recording that he felt the yearning and urgency in the musical numbers, especially in “Another Hundred People.”  The show is probably one of the reasons that Daddycatcher fell in love with New York.  As it is a show that could only be set in New York.

Company is, without a doubt, Daddycatcher’s favorite Sondheim musical.  The recent Broadway revival, which starred Raúl Esparza, was the closest thing to the ideal production that Daddycatcher has pictured in his head.
