The Royal Family was written by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber as a parody of the Barrymore Family, the acting dynasty of the time, especially John Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore.

Drew Barrymore, granddaughter of John, is the only remaining member of the family to continue on as an actress.
